The Summer Solstice is when the Sun is at its highest point in the sky during a year. The solstice itself is one moment, but many use the word to mean the day when the solstice happens. The Summer Solstice does not always happen on exactly the same day. The Summer Solstice takes place this year on June 21, 2014.

Stonehenge is an ancient prehistoric site and has been a place of worship and celebration at the time of Summer Solstice since time immemorial. Stonehenge is an English Heritage managed site and will be having managed open access on June 20th and June 21st, for peaceful celebrations and own forms of ceremony. You can visit the English Heritage site for more details. Home » Blog » Page 6

Love a Tree Day

Love-a-tree-day

Love a Tree Day takes place on May 16th

Love a Tree Day takes place this year on May 16. When I think of trees I think of this quote by Frank Lloyd Wright: “The best friend of earth of man is the tree. When we use the tree respectfully and economically, we have one of the greatest resources on the earth.”

I love trees, from the magnificent, mighty oak to the graceful, but fragile looking willow.

Who can resist the dainty blossoms and rich fruits the trees give us in spring?

I love the rich fullness of their leaves in summer blowing in the easy wind like little waving flags of nature.

I love the autumn even more so when the leaves of so many species of trees turn into shades of red, gold and burnt orange and then nutmeg brown only to then fall to the ground in mounds that not even a grown-up could resist rustling and bustling.

I love the artful branches in winter like elongated arms with knotty knuckles and pointy fingers. Many might think trees in winter are their ugliest but to me this is when a tree is truly laid bare for the world to see and in its vulnerable state I see its most intricate beauty.

Trees give us the ability to breathe in fresh air, provide grateful shade on sunny days and provide a habitat for a host of animals. This is just a tiny fraction of reasons why it is so important to start making the switch from using paper based disposable products to more sustainable non-disposable products, and preferably organic where possible. Making the switch from a paper facial tissue to an organic handkerchief is a good place to start.

At The Organic Handkerchiefs Company, we make organic handkerchiefs in 4 different sizes to cater for everyone. For the uninitiated hanky user, may I suggest small white organic cotton handkerchiefs, which are 8” x 8” and are similar in size to paper facial tissues? We also make organic handkerchiefs in medium (11”), large (14”) and, even, huge (18”)! Our small, medium and large sizes come in a set of 3, perfect to start with to just enough for a great little addition to your handkerchief collection. The huge size is large enough to wear as a bandana around your neck.

I hope you too will join in and do something positive for the trees on Love a Tree Day and beyond.

A small change to make, but a big difference for a tree.

For Fathers Day turn Dad into an Eco Warrior

For Fathers Day turn Dad into an Eco Warrior

with this Official Eco Warrior Badge

Dads are our own superheroes in a way, the captains of our family team, the original ‘I’m the Daddy!’

When you think of Dad, what memories do you conjure? I can tell you what comes to mind for me.

Dad always packed up the car and drove when we went on vacation. No matter where we were going, we had to ‘be on the road’ by 6:00 a.m.

Dad was always in charge of the bar-b-que (BBQ), or the Grill Sergeant, as I liked to call him. No one could coat bbq chicken like that man. It became an unrecognizable orangey black piece of who-knows-what by the time he was done with it, but, boy did that chicken taste good.

Dad used to remind me of ‘Father Bear’ from the Goldilocks fairytale because he had his own chair and only he could sit in it. He was very clear on that point; no-one was to sit in his chair, like, ever! I think, like Goldilocks, his chair wasn’t too hard and wasn’t too soft for him but obviously anyone else sitting in it at any point in time could re-shape the chair foam and ruin it for him. That was my best guess anyway.

Dad always washed the family car. And hand dried the car. And then waxed the car. And then polished the car until it beamed back at you with the glare strength only a death ray could muster.

Perhaps you have similar stories to mine and doesn’t it put a smile on your face? Look, I know there are plenty of Fathers day gift ideas out there but how many years can you give your Father a tie or a pair of socks? Dads hate ties and they probably have over 100 anyway. Fatherhood does not also equal a love of socks.

How about this year for Fathers Day turn Dad into an Eco Warrior by giving him a set of 3 Large White Organic Cotton Handkerchiefs from The Organic Handkerchiefs Company? They are silky soft, are 14” x 14” in size, and, like an Eco Warrior, are built to last!

On Fathers day turn Dad into an Eco Warrior by printing the above picture of the The Organic Handkerchiefs Company Official Eco Warrior Badge, cutting it out and attaching it to your gift. It’s just a bit of fun. Speaking of fun and guaranteed to make you smile, check out my funny video on how to turn Dad into an Eco Warrior.

Happy Fathers Day to my dad and to all the dads in the world, this Fathers Day, June 15, 2014. Home » Blog » Page 6

Using non-disposable goods: better for you and environment

Using-non-disposable-goods

Using non-disposable goods

is better for you and the environment

Using non-disposable goods instead of disposables will save you a small fortune over the years and will be so much better for the environment. The Organic Handkerchiefs Company promotes the use of organic handkerchiefs over paper facial tissues. This is better not only for the environment but also for you to save money in the long term.

In fact, I believe by using non-disposable goods your wallet could be £250 a year better off switching from ‘disposable’ goods like toilet roll, kitchen roll, facial tissues, cling film, regular batteries, disposable razors, paper plates, napkins, feminine hygiene products, sandwich bags, refuse sacks, plastic party cups, baby wipes, make up remover wipes, cleaning wipes, sponges, sticky sponge mop attachments, air fresheners to ‘non-disposable’ goods. So what kinds of products are out there to help you make the switch to start using non-disposable goods?

Well, off the top of my head, you could use tea towels / kitchen towels instead of kitchen roll (paper towels), handkerchiefs, preferably organic ones but I may be biased here, instead of paper facial tissues. Refrigerator dishes or Tupperware instead of cling film (saran wrap). Switch from regular batteries to re-chargeable ones. You could simply wash your plates instead of using paper plates and use lovely cloth napkins instead of paper ones. Switching to non-disposable goods is also so much better for the environment.

Feminine cloth pads are now available instead of maxi pads. There are now cloth sandwich bags available instead of plastic ones. And of course, you can use a hand wash small towel to clean your face with instead of using wipes. These are just some ideas but if you open your mind and start poking around the internet, you will come up with all sorts of alternatives. Yes, they cost a bit of money initially, but again, the savings over the course of 1 year could be massive and don’t forget, over several years this money compounds to even greater savings. I sincerely hope you’ve come away from reading this just a little bit richer!
